RESUMO

Bioinert materials such as the zirconium dioxide and aluminum oxide are widely used in surgery and dentistry due to the absence of cytotoxicity of the materials in relation to the surrounding cells of the body. However, little attention has been paid to the study of metabolic processes occurring at the implant-cell interface. The metabolic activity of mouse 3T3 fibroblasts incubated on yttrium-stabilized zirconium ceramics cured with aluminum oxide (ATZ) and stabilized zirconium ceramics (Y-TZP) was analyzed based on the ratio of the free/bound forms of cofactors NAD(P)H and FAD obtained using two-photon microscopy. The results show that fibroblasts incubated on ceramics demonstrate a shift towards the free form of NAD(P)H, which is observed during the glycolysis process, which, according to our assumptions, is related to the porosity of the surface of ceramic structures. Consequently, despite the high viability and good proliferation of fibroblasts assessed using an MTT test and a scanning electron microscope, the cells are in a state of hypoxia during incubation on ceramic structures. The FLIM results obtained in this work can be used as additional information for scientists who are interested in manufacturing osteoimplants.

RESUMO

The treatment of wastewater from arsenic compounds is an important and urgent problem. Composite nanostructures consisting of boehmite and iron compounds have a high adsorption capacity towards As(V) specie. In this work, the adsorption properties of nanostructured composites prepared by the oxidation of bimetallic Al/Fe nanoparticles with different iron contents were investigated. As a result of oxidation, boehmite AlOOH nanosheets are formed, with the resultant FeAl2 nanoparticles being distributed on the surface of boehmite nanosheets. The nanostructured composites prepared from Al/Fe nanoparticles containing 20 wt% Fe have been found to show the highest adsorption capacity towards As(V) specie, being 248 mg/g. The adsorption isotherms are most accurately described by the Freundlich model, with the arsenic adsorption process obeying pseudo second order kinetics. As a result of the study, the optimal ratio of Al and Fe in Al/Fe nanoparticles has been determined to obtain an AlOOH/FeAl2 composite adsorbent with a developed and accessible surface and a high sorption capacity towards As(V). This allows us to consider this material as a promising adsorbent for the removal of arsenic compounds from water.

RESUMO

The water oxidation of bimetallic Al/Ag nanoparticles has been shown to yield nanoscale structures whose morphology, phase composition and textural characteristics are determined by the synthesis conditions. Flower-like nanoscale structures with silver nanoparticles, with an average size of 17 nm, are formed in water at 60 °C. Under hydrothermal conditions at temperatures of 200 °C and a pressure of 16 MPa, boehmite nanoplatelets with silver nanoparticles, with an average size of 22 nm, are formed. The oxidation of Al/Ag nanoparticles using humid air at 60 °C and 80% relative humidity results in the formation of rod-shaped bayerite nanoparticles and Ag nanoparticles with an average size of 19 nm. The thermal treatment of nanoscale structures obtained at a temperature of 500 °C has been shown to lead to a phase transition into γ-Al2O3, while maintaining the original morphology, and to a decrease in the average size of the silver nanoparticles to 12 nm and their migration to the surface of nanoscale structures. The migration of silver to the nanoparticle surface influences the formation of a double electric layer of particles, and leads to a shift in the pH of the zero-charge point by approximately one, with the nanostructures acquiring pronounced antimicrobial properties.

RESUMO

Composite nanostructures containing iron in different forms exhibit a high adsorption capacity with respect to arsenic. The aim of our study was to investigate the adsorption activity of an adsorbent composite prepared by the oxidation of bimetallic Al/Fe nanoparticles under different conditions. Depending on the oxidation conditions, nanostructures with different morphologies in the form of nanosheets, nanoplates and nanorods with different compositions and textural characteristics could be obtained. The nanostructures obtained had a positive zeta potential and were characterized by a high specific surface area: 330 m2/g for the AlOOH/FeAl2 nanosheets; 75 m2/g for the AlOOH/Fe2O3/FeAl2 nanoplates; and 43 m2/g for the Al(OH)3/FeAl2 nanorods. The distribution of an FeAl2 intermetallide over the surface of the AlOOH nanostructures led to an increase in arsenic adsorption of 25% for the AlOOH/FeAl2 nanosheets and of 34% for the AlOOH/Fe2O3/FeAl2 nanoplates and Al(OH)3/FeAl2 nanorods. The adsorption isotherms matched most preciously to the Freundlich model. This fact indicated the energy heterogeneity of the adsorbent surface and multilayer adsorption. The nanostructures studied can be used to purify water contaminated with arsenic.

RESUMO

Fe-based scaffolds are of particular interest in the technology of biodegradable implants due to their high mechanical properties and biocompatibility. In the present work, using an electroexplosive Fe nanopowder and NaCl particles 100-200 µm in size as a porogen, scaffolds with a porosity of about 70 ± 0.8% were obtained. The effect of the sintering temperature on the structure, composition, and mechanical characteristics of the scaffolds was considered. The optimum parameters of the sintering process were determined, allowing us to obtain samples characterized by plastic deformation and a yield strength of up to 16.2 MPa. The degradation of the scaffolds sintered at 1000 and 1100 °C in 0.9 wt.% NaCl solution for 28 days resulted in a decrease in their strength by 23% and 17%, respectively.

RESUMO

The paper studies patterns of interaction of electroexplosive Co nanoparticles with air oxygen during heating. The characteristics of Co nanoparticles and composite Co/CoO/Co3O4 nanoparticles formed as a result of oxidation were studied using transmission electron microscopy, X-ray phase analysis, thermogravimetric analysis, differential scanning calorimetry, and vibrating sample magnetometry. It was established that nanoparticles with similar morphology in the form of hollow spheres with different content of Co, CoO, and Co3O4 can be produced by varying oxidation temperatures. The influence of the composition of composite nanoparticles on their magnetic characteristics is shown.

RESUMO

Drug delivery systems based on calcium phosphate (CaP) coatings have been recently recognized as beneficial drug delivery systems in complex cases of bone diseases for admission of drugs in the localized area, simultaneously inducing osteoinduction because of the bioavailable Ca and P ions. However, micro-arc oxidation (MAO) deposition of CaP does not allow for the formation of a coating with sufficient interconnected porosity for drug delivery purposes. Here, we report on the method to deposit CaP-based coatings using a new hybrid ultrasound-assisted MAO (UMAOH) method for deposition of coatings for drug delivery that could carry various types of drugs, such as cytostatic, antibacterial, or immunomodulatory compositions. Application of UMAOH resulted in coatings with an Ra roughness equal to 3.5 µm, a thickness of 50-55 µm, and a combination of high values of internal and surface porosity, 39 and 28%, respectively. The coating is represented by the monetite phase that is distributed in the matrix of amorphous CaP. Optimal conditions of coating deposition have been determined and used for drug delivery by impregnation with Vancomycin, 5-Fluorouracil, and Interferon-α-2b. Cytotoxicity and antimicrobial activity of the manufactured drug-carrying coatings have been studied using the three different cell lines and methicillin-resistant S. aureus.

RESUMO

Owing to their unique physicochemical properties, nanomaterials have become a focus of multidisciplinary research efforts including investigations of their interactions with tumor cells and stromal compartment of tumor microenvironment (TME) toward the development of next-generation anticancer therapies. Here, we report that agglomerates of radially assembled Al hydroxide crumpled nanosheets exhibit anticancer activity due to their selective adsorption properties and positive charge. This effect was demonstrated in vitro by decreased proliferation and viability of tumor cells, and further confirmed in two murine cancer models. Moreover, Al hydroxide nanosheets almost completely inhibited the growth of murine melanoma in vivo in combination with a minimally effective dose of doxorubicin. Our direct molecular dynamics simulation demonstrated that Al hydroxide nanosheets can cause significant ion imbalance in the living cell perimembranous space through the selective adsorption of extracellular anionic species. This approach to TME dysregulation could lay the foundation for development of novel anticancer therapy strategies.
